Salt Lake Bees Honor First Responders and Hold Driven to Assist Donation Drive on September 11

In honor of the September 11 Day of Service and Remembrance, employees at the Jordan Commons campus conducted a week-long Driven to Assist food and clothing drive to benefit Utah Food Bank and Shelter the Homeless. Community members donated at Smith’s Ballpark throughout the day on September 11 and received ticket vouchers to a Bees game.

“Shelter the Homeless is so fortunate to have the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies as a partner. I can’t tell you how invaluable it is to know you’re supporting the needs of the community we serve,” said Laurie Hopkins, Executive Director, Shelter the Homeless.

The Salt Lake Bees planned several events to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The Bees started the day by turning on the Smith’s Ballpark stadium lights at 6:46 a.m. (MT), the time American Airlines Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. The lights at the stadium remained on for 24 hours to honor the victims of 9/11.

Before the game, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall joined the Bees in leading a moment of silence. “As we reflect on the 20th anniversary of the attacks on September 11, our thoughts are with the individuals and the families whose lives were forever changed that day, and the servicemen and women who have served and defended our nation every year since,” said Mayor Mendenhall. “September 11 and the years that have passed have changed us as individuals, as Fire Departments across this country, as cities, and as a nation. Today, and always, we remember.”

An honor guard of Salt Lake City Fire and Police conducted a flag ceremony, the Salt Lake City Fire Department Choir performed the National Anthem, and Salt Lake City Fire Department Deputy Chief, Rusty McMicken, threw the first pitch.

Tickets for the game on Saturday were half price for first responders as a thank you for their sacrifice and service.
