Jelani “Comp” Mitchell Named NBA 2K League Coach of the Year

Jazz Gaming Head Coach Jelani “Comp” Mitchell has been named the NBA 2K League Coach of the Year, the league announced today. In his second season with Jazz Gaming, “Comp” guided the team to a 14-2 (.875) regular season record, its best in franchise history, and earned the No. 2 seed in the playoffs. “Comp” was selected in a vote by players, coaches, team managers and media.

The 2020 Jazz Gaming Playoffs presented by America First Credit Union continue today with the NBA 2K League semifinals against Warriors Gaming Squad (Golden State Warriors affiliate). The three-game series will tip off at 1 p.m. (MT) on ESPN2, ESPN’s digital platforms, and the NBA 2K League’s Twitch and YouTube channels.

In addition to posting a six-game improvement over an 8-8 (.500) finish in 2019 and securing the first playoff berth in franchise history, Mitchell led the club to final four finishes in both of its in-season tournament appearances in 2020.

“Our team has made incredible strides under ‘Comp’s’ leadership, which is a testament to his immense knowledge of the game, tireless dedication to the team and continued commitment to our players,” said Jonathan Rinehart, managing director of Jazz Gaming. “I’m proud to see Jelani’s efforts recognized and rewarded with this well-deserved honor from the league and his peers.”

“Comp,” who hails from Brooklyn, N.Y., is a well-respected advocate for the NBA 2K community. The second-year coach leads Jazz Gaming’s team program and strategy, including developing and executing game plans, scouting opponents, organizing practices and scrimmages, and developing roster talent.

In addition to the Coach of the Year accolade, Jazz Gaming was recognized with two finalists for NBA 2K League Awards during today’s broadcast. Guard Kimanni “Splashy” Ingram was named a finalist for Rookie of the Year and center Spencer “Ria” Wyman was selected as a finalist for Defensive Player of the Year. Last week, “Ria” was named a finalist for Season 3 Most Valuable Player.

The remaining NBA 2K League Awards will be announced on Friday, Aug. 28, during the preshow broadcast for the NBA 2K League Finals delivered by DoorDash.
