NBA Math Hoops National Champs Emma Peterson and Kapri Peterson.

Sixth-graders Emma Peterson and Kapri Peterson from Carden Memorial School in Salt Lake City won the NBA Math Hoops National Championship on September 3, 2020, representing the Utah Jazz during the competition that encourages students to learn fundamental math skills through the game of basketball.

The duo, who were known as “The Golden Girls” during online play, defeated “Team Lions,” who represented the Milwaukee Bucks, in the Finals. “The Golden Girls” were joined virtually by Utah Jazz Bear during the semifinal and championship rounds, which were streamed live on the Learn Fresh YouTube channel.

This season’s championship marks the second time in three years that a team representing the Jazz collected the trophy. In 2018, sixth-grader Angela Montelongo of Mary W. Jackson Elementary and fifth-grader Will Cooley of Carden Memorial School won the NBA Math Hoops National Championship at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.

Last January, the Jazz hosted a “Math Hoops Live” event where the board game transformed into real-life competition on the basketball court at Bruin Arena on the campus of Salt Lake Community College in Taylorsville. Jazz two-way forward Jarrell Brantley and Salt Lake City Stars forward Wyatt Walker captained two teams of local students at the educational gathering.
