Thanksgiving Meal for the Homeless

For the 23rd consecutive year, the Larry H. and Gail Miller family and the Utah Jazz continued their tradition of providing Thanksgiving meals for the homeless and low-income individuals in Salt Lake City.

On Tuesday, Nov. 23, Utah Food Services prepared more than 3,000 Thanksgiving meals for delivery/pickup to community resource centers including the Salt Lake Rescue Mission, Salt Lake Mission, Gail Miller Resource Center, Gerald E. King Resource Center, Road Home Men’s Resource Center and The Inn Between.

The Thanksgiving meal included sliced turkey breast, cubed potatoes, gravy, stuffing with celery and onion, peas and carrots, dinner roll and butter, and cookies.

“We are honored to continue a 23-year tradition of joining with the Jazz organization to provide a Thanksgiving meal to our brothers and sisters who are experiencing homelessness,” said Gail Miller, owner of the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies. “During this season of gratitude, we have the opportunity to pause and reflect on the things we are thankful for in our lives. Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life, and I believe gratitude is best expressed in the way we help others.”

In years past, the annual feast has been held on the main concourse at Vivint Arena, the home of the Utah Jazz, with about 150 volunteers from the Jazz organization, including players, coaches, and employees, serving the meals to residents in need. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual “We Care – We Share” Thanksgiving Meal has been carried out by delivery/pickup only in 2020 and 2021.

“It is important for us to continue the long-standing service of providing Thanksgiving meals for those less fortunate,” said Jim Olson, president of the Utah Jazz. “We are all part of this community and mindful of extending our blessings as individuals and an organization. We are very thankful for our partners in this annual endeavor to help feed people and bring some holiday cheer.”
