2021 LHMVoices: Measuring Employee Engagement

More than 3,400 full-time employees from the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies participated in our 2021 LHMVoices employee engagement survey. The perspectives, opinions and ideas shared help us better understand our strengths and where we can grow.

The findings from the survey will be used to help shape the future of the LHM Group, using firsthand and confidential feedback to guide us as we improve the work experience for every employee.

Our participation rate was 47%, which is consistent with our 2019 survey. Our overall engagement score also held steady at 89% favorable, far exceeding industry averages. The engagement score is calculated based on your responses to several questions including:

  • Overall, how satisfied are you working for your place of business?
  • I find special meaning in what I do.
  • I feel a sense of pride in my work accomplishments.

Our most improved areas, recording a 3% increase were:

  • We celebrate people who try new and better ways of doing things, regardless of the outcome.
  • My company lives up to the LHM Group of Companies’ vision to be the best place in town to do business.
  • My immediate manager is committed to supporting a culture of inclusion.
  • My immediate manager gives me opportunities that align with my career goals.

Our areas for improvement saw a 1% change from the last survey and include:

  • I know how to report a respect-in-the-workplace issue.
  • I am comfortable challenging myself.
  • I receive positive feedback from my manager when I do a good job.

We added two questions this year about unconscious bias training and resources for healthy living and overall wellbeing. We also wanted to know what is causing additional pressure or stress in your everyday life. Common causes of additional stress mentioned by our employees included COVID, money, balance, and time. Leadership teams and managers will take your feedback into account as they work to support employee mental fitness going forward. As they carefully review the survey results, leaders are working together to create action plans for continuous improvement and will share progress and outcomes along the way.

Your voice is important, and your feedback is essential in achieving our vision to be the best place in town to work and the best place in town to do business. In fact, because of your commitment to our vision, we saw a significant increase (86% up from 83% in 2019) in response to the question, “My company lives up to the LHM Group’s vision to be the best place in town to do business.”
