The Business of Doing Good

Leadership Message from Don Stirling

As 2021 comes to a close, I’ve reflected on the incredible teamwork needed to bring to pass the Utah Jazz and Miller Automotive transactions, as well as the Advanced Health Care and Daybreak acquisitions. It struck me that we are experiencing, in our own way, a phenomenon known as the virtuous cycle. A virtuous cycle refers to complex chains of events that reinforce themselves through a feedback loop. With each recurring cycle of events, the result of each one increases the beneficial effect of the next. In our case, talented and dedicated employees create good business, good business produces good profit, and good profit produces good giving, which is what the Miller family is all about.

I’d like to share some of the ways the Larry H. & Gail Miller Family Foundation continues to enrich lives. One project you may have heard about in the news is called The Period Project. We are supporting the effort of providing feminine hygiene products to students in schools that otherwise wouldn’t have access to them. We are also donating money to support teen centers on high school campuses that provide housing, food and hygiene products, computer access, and mentorship to students who don’t have stable housing. Another area of focus is the State of Utah Afghan Refugee Project. The Miller family has contributed to this effort to welcome over 800 refugees coming into Utah soon.

“Refugees are our brothers and sisters. No matter their background or ethnicity, we welcome them here. I’m so proud of the state of Utah and our nation for opening our arms to welcome our new neighbors and friends.”

Steve Starks

These are wonderful initiatives that will enrich many lives. I also want to mention efforts that have been done consistently for many years, including the feeding of those experiencing homelessness, the Christmas Carole Sing-Along, Sub for Santa, food bank donations, and the incredible work by LHM Charities, which blesses the lives of women and children in the places where we do business.

It’s about enriching lives. And it starts upstream with having excellent employees who are doing good work and providing the resources that ultimately get spread back out into the community. The Miller family and employees of the LHM Group have always been ready to step up, lift, and assist.

So, as we close out this year, I want to thank each of you for all you’re doing. Many hands work together on the philanthropic effort. The work that we accomplish as a united group will continue to be incredibly impactful in lifting communities and enriching lives, which was and remains the vision and goal of the Miller family and this extraordinary company.
